An update from "Take
it to the People" on the gay Marriage struggle
This is the time to make
a big push on our representatives. The same-sex marriage bill (S.115) is
set for a floor vote on Thursday or Friday of this week. The House Judiciary
Committee will vote the bill out on Tuesday. The House will then deal with
the Appropriations bill -- what we sent them to Montpelier to -- before
dealing with what we didn't send them to Montpelier to do.
The promise of a veto isn't
the end of the matter. The bill's supporters have vowed to challenge the
Governor's veto. They need 100 votes to override the veto. We need 50 votes
to sustain the veto. There are 48 Republicans but several of those have
said they would support the Same-Sex Marriage bill. So the Blue Dog Democrats
(socially conservative, often from districts with strong Roman Catholic
populations) are the potential heroes of the day. If most of them go with
the Gov., the veto will stand.
